Peru Votes for President, Fujimori's Daughter Among Favorites by VOA News Peruvians are going to the polls Sunday for the first round of a presidential election that is expected to lead to a runoff. Analysts said the daughter of imprisoned former President Alberto Fujimori will likely do well in the first round of voting. Pollsters said center-right politician Keiko Fujimori has a double-digit lead over her nearest opponent, but will likely not win the simple majority needed for an outright win. An Ipso poll predicted Fujimori would win 35 percent of the vote Sunday, while Wall Street banker Pedro Pablo Kuczynski would receive 21 percent. Following closely behind is nationalist Veronika Mendoza at 20 percent. Fujimori has tried to distance herself from her father's authoritarian rule of Peru from 1990 to 2000. The 77-year-old former president is serving a 25-year sentence for human rights abuses and corruption during his term.
