Garissa University Marks Anniversary of Terror Attack by VOA News Students at Kenya's Garissa University are marking the one-year anniversary since a terror attack on the eastern Kenyan school in which 148 people were killed. Students are gathering to sing hymns, light candles and share stories about their fellow students, many of whom were gunned down after a group of al-Shabab militants entered their residence hall and executed students in a siege that lasted some 16 hours. Government officials are attending some memorial events, despite criticism they were unresponsive in the days following the attack. Kenya has been the subject of a number of al-Shabab attacks since 2011 when the Kenyan government began sending troops to help neighboring Somalia fight the militant group. Al-Shabab has also claimed responsibility for the 2013 attack on Nairobi's Westgate shopping center when 67 people were killed over a period of two days. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/garissa-university-anniversary/326585 4.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/garissa-university-anniversary/3265854.html
