             Attacker Killed After Trying to Stab Israeli Policeman

   The tense Old City section of east Jerusalem saw another violent
   encounter Monday when an attacker tried to stab an Israeli policeman
   before being shot dead.

   A spokesman for the Israeli Defense Forces said the attack happened
   near the Lions Gate and that the knife was deflected by the policeman's
   protective vest.

   The incident is the latest in a wave of attacks to take place in
   Jerusalem linked to the holy site that Muslims call the al-Aqsa mosque
   and Jews call the Temple Mount.

   Palestinians, already frustrated by continued Jewish settlements in
   lands they want for a future state, accuse Israelis of trying to
   restrict them from the site.  Israel denies the charge and accuses
   Palestinian militants of inciting citizens to riot.

   Monday's attack followed violence in other areas on Sunday, including
   Israeli gunfire killing a 13-year-old Palestinian boy during a clash
   outside a checkpoint in the West Bank. Israeli soldiers said
   demonstrators there were attacking them with rocks and firebombs.

   Palestinians were also wounded during violent demonstrations in Gaza.

   In northern Israel, an Arab Israeli struck four people with his car
   before jumping out and stabbing them outside a kibbutz.

   Israeli forces also carried out an airstrike early Sunday in Gaza that
   killed a pregnant Palestinian and her toddler daughter.  The military
   said the strike was done in retaliation for rocket fire from the
   Hamas-controlled area.

   Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to do all he can
   to stop what he calls a wave of terror, but is reluctant to listen to
   hardliners to take strong action. He is afraid of losing support from
   key Western allies.

   Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has appealed to his people to avoid
   violence and not play into the Israeli government's hands. But there
   appears to be very little he can do to control rock-throwing youths.
