                   Knife Attacks in Israel Escalate Tensions

   A suspected Palestinian militant later stabbed an Israeli soldier in
   the southern Israeli town of Kiryat Gat, before being pursued by
   security forces and shot dead, according to police.

   The Wednesday attacks are the latest violent incidents that are
   escalating Israeli-Palestinian tensions.

   Before security measures were lifted Tuesday, Israeli officials had
   barred nonresident Palestinians from Jerusalem's Old City.

   Violence between Israeli forces and Palestinians has grown in the past
   week, primarily over the East Jerusalem holy site revered by Muslims as
   the al-Aqsa mosque and Jews as the Temple Mount.

   The surge in violence prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
   Netanyahu to cancel a visit  this week to Germany.

   Four Israelis died last week in shooting and stabbing attacks in
   Jerusalem and the West Bank, while Israeli forces have killed four
   Palestinians, including a 13-year-old boy, amid violent protests.

   The unrest has spread and triggered fears of a new Palestinian
   uprising.
