Ex-Hong Kong Leader Charged With Corruption by VOA News Former Hong Kong chief executive Donald Tsang has been charged with two counts of official misconduct, becoming the territory's most high-profile government official facing a corruption scandal. The Independent Commission Against Corruption released a statement Monday detailing the charges against the 70-year-old Tsang, who served as Hong Kong's leader from 2005 to 2012. He is accused of failing to disclose that he was renting a luxury apartment in the Chinese city of Shenzhen from an investor seeking a license from the government. The commission has also charged Tsang with failing to disclose he had proposed a government award for an architect he hired to redecorate the apartment. Tsang was released on bail after appearing before a magistrate's court Monday morning to face the charges. He declared his innocence in a statement to the South China Morning Post, saying his conscience is clear. "I have every confidence the court will exonerate me after its proceedings," he wrote. The case is one of several in recent years that have raised concerns in the territory about close ties between government officials and wealthy businessmen. Former government official Rafael Hui was sentenced last December to seven-and-a-half years in prison for accepting bribes from a high-powered Hong Kong developer. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/ex-hong-kong-leader-charged-with-corr uption/2991687.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/ex-hong-kong-leader-charged-with-corruption/2991687.html
