Trial Begins for 1st of 6 Baltimore Officers in Freddie Gray Death by VOA News Jury selection begins Monday in the trial of the first of six Baltimore officers facing charges in the death of a black man injured in police custody. The incident in Maryland sparked weeks of protests earlier this year. William Porter is accused of manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment, and misconduct as one of the officers who dealt with Freddie Gray after his arrest on a city street on April 12. The 25-year-old Gray suffered a severe spinal injury as he was transported in a police van for 45 minutes. He died a week later in a Baltimore hospital. Allegations of racial discrimination and systemic police misconduct triggered weeks of demonstrations in Baltimore and around the country. The six police officers facing charges will be tried separately. Porter and two of the other officers are black; the other three are white. "We just want fairness and justice for Freddie Gray in a legal, calm way, and the courtroom is where it's happening," Tessa Hill-Alston, president of the city's NAACP chapter, told The Baltimore Sun newspaper. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/trial-begins-for-first-of-six-baltimo re-officers-in-freddie-gray-death/3081078.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/trial-begins-for-first-of-six-baltimore-officers-in-freddie-gray-death/3081078.html
