                    Afghanistan Official Targeted in Attack

   Police in Afghanistan said a regional director of the Independent
   Election Commission narrowly escaped a suicide attack in eastern Kabul
   Saturday.

   Police said Abdul Rahman Rodwal's driver was killed and several people
   nearby were wounded in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

   So far, no one has claimed responsibility. But the Taliban, which
   strives to overturn the government, is known for similar attacks.
