Israeli Forces Kill Palestinian Fisherman by VOA News Israeli naval forces shot and killed a Palestinian fisherman off the coast of the Gaza Strip Saturday, Palestinian health officials said. The man who was killed, identified as Tawfiq Abu Riala, was reportedly in his 30s. An Israeli military spokeswoman said the soldiers opened fire after four Palestinian boats strayed from the designated fishing zone. Israel maintains a naval blockade of Gaza, but has designated a six-nautical-mile zone for Gazans to fish. Israel has said the blockade is in place to prevent the smuggling of weapons to Gaza's Hamas leaders. The Islamic militant group fought a 50-day war with Israel last July and August. More than 2,200 Palestinians were killed in the conflict, along with more than 70 Israelis. The U.N. says two-thirds of the Palestinian casualties were civilians. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/israeli-forces-kill-palestinian-fishe rman/2671457.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/israeli-forces-kill-palestinian-fisherman/2671457.html
