Typhoon Chan-hom Makes Landfall in China by VOA News Typhoon Chan-hom made landfall south of Shanghai, China, Saturday afternoon. The storm had winds gusting to 160 kph and dumped about 100 millimeters (4 inches) of rain as it landed near Zhoushan in Zhejiang province. Heavy downpours were reported in other areas, such as the village of Lai'ao, which reported 400 millimeters (16 inches) of rain since Friday evening. The Xinhua News Agency reported no deaths or injuries had been reported by Saturday night. Chan-hom, which was earlier billed as a super typhoon but downgraded to strong typhoon Saturday, may be the most powerful typhoon to hit China since the Communist Party took power in 1949, local media said. '' More than 1 million people were evacuated from coastal areas of Zhejiang and more than 46,000 in neighboring Jiangsu province ahead of the storm, Xinhua reported. The provincial flood control bureau said nearly 30,000 ships had been ordered back to port. Officials siad the schedules of scores of flights, trains and buses have been disrupted in the region. The storm had already hit the northern Philippines and southern Japan, which reported 20 people were injured. Earlier in the week, typhoon Linfa made landfall on the coast of China's southern Guangdong province.
