Tunisia Declares State of Emergency After Beach Attack by VOA News Tunisia's president declared a state of emergency on Saturday, eight days after a gunman at a popular resort attacked foreign tourists on the beach, killing 38 people. It was not immediately clear why President Beji Caid Essebsi decided to declare the state of emergency, or what it would entail. The state news agency said the president would address the nation later in the day. An earlier state of emergency, granting special powers to the police and army, was lifted in March 2014, having been in force since longtime president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali was ousted in a 2011 revolution. Tunisia has faced a surge in jihadist violence since the revolution in which dozens of police and soldiers have been killed. Thirty of the 38 dead in the Tunisian resort of Sousse were British tourists. Britain's Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister David Cameron led a moment of silence Friday for those victims. ''Other vacationers killed were from Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Portugal and Russia. The gunman, Saif Rezgui, was killed by security forces in the city of Sousse following the shooting. Officials have said he was the only shooter, but that they were searching for people who may have provided help before the attack. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility, just as it did when two gunmen killed 21 people at the Bardo museum in Tunis in March. Officials said Rezgui and the Bardo gunmen trained in Libya at the same time. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/tunisia-declares-state-of-emergency-a fter-beach-attack/2848893.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/tunisia-declares-state-of-emergency-after-beach-attack/2848893.html
