The Kim Nirvana was carrying 173 people on Thursday when officials say it went down only a kilometer from the shore in Ormoc City. The coast guard says at least 118 people have been rescued, but at least 19 people remain unaccounted for. Ferry accidents kill dozens, if not hundreds, of people each year in the Philippines, thanks in part to overcrowding and poor safety standards. Passenger boats are an important mode of transportation in the archipelago nation, which is made up of more than 7,000 islands. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/philippines-ferry-accident/2845987.ht ml References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/philippines-ferry-accident/2845987.html
