                   'Star Trek' Actor Leonard Nimoy Dies at 83

   U.S. actor Leonard Nimoy, best known for his character Mr. Spock on the
   short-lived but much-loved TV series "Star Trek," has died in Los
   Angeles at age 83.

   Family members confirmed the death of the actor and director, a year
   after he revealed he had been diagnosed with lung disease.

   Nimoy took character roles in a number of television shows and movies
   but will be best remembered for the central role he played in the "Star
   Trek" series. It ran on U.S. television for only three seasons, from
   1966 to 1969, but has found a long life in syndication.

   ''Nimoy's character, Mr. Spock, was a half-human, half-alien fighting a
   continual war between emotion and logic. His calm demeanor was a foil
   to the mercurial nature of the ship's captain, played by William
   Shatner, as the two men and a small crew explored new worlds beyond
   Earth.

   Nimoy was raised in the northeastern city of Boston by parents who were
   Orthodox Jewish immigrants from Ukraine. Nimoy's dark features were
   vaguely exotic, making him a frequent choice for "outsider" roles.

   After "Star Trek," Nimoy went on to other acting roles, directed
   movies, and explored the worlds of poetry and photography. But he came
   back to the franchise for a number of appearances in "Star Trek"
   movies, the final one being a short appearance in 2013's "Star Trek
   Into Darkness."

   Nimoy's two biographies, 1975's "I Am Not Spock" and 1995's "I Am
   Spock," demonstrated his evolving relationship with his best-known
   role.

   He also kept up an active Twitter account, sharing bits of poetry,
   advice and musings, all of them signed with Spock's signature phrase,
   "Live long and prosper."
