US, Italy Leading Push to Solidify Support for Libya Peace Deal by VOA News U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his Italian counterpart Paolo Gentiloni are hosting a meeting Sunday seeking to show the support and commitment of the international community to a long-sought peace agreement in Libya. The country's rival governments are expected to sign the U.N.-brokered peace deal on Wednesday after nearly a year of talks to agree on a process to create a unity government. The plan calls for the unity body to be formed within 40 days with members of both the current internationally recognized government based on Tobruk and the Islamist-backed body that has been operating out of Tripoli. Kerry and Gentiloni are being joined Sunday by representatives from Libya's neighbors and others in the region. U.N. envoy for Libya Martin Kobler told the U.N. Security Council Friday that Libyans are united in their view that the country "can and should no longer wait for peace to come." "The Libyans have a unique opportunity before them. The time has come to make peace. It is unlikely that there will be other opportunities without inflicting further suffering and hardship on the Libyan people." He also highlighted the threat posed by Islamic State and other extremist groups, saying Libya is in a "race against time" as militants seek to claim territory for their own. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/libya/3100862.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/libya/3100862.html
