Australia Police Arrest Man for Funding Terror Group in Syria by VOA News Australian police have arrested a man they say tried to provide funds for a United States citizen who is believed to be fighting with Islamic extremists in Syria. The unidentified 23-year-old was arrested Tuesday during a raid on several homes across the southern Australian city of Melbourne. Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Gaughan said the suspect tried to funnel $10,500 to the U.S. man fighting in Syria. "I can confirm that a 23-year-old man from Seabrook will be charged with intentionally making funds available to a terrorist organization knowing that organization was a terrorist organization," said Gaughan. Police believe the suspect was working alone and did not represent an imminent threat to the public. They also say he was not connected to the terror suspect who was shot last week by police in Melbourne. Eighteen-year-old Numan Haidar was killed last Thursday after he stabbed two police officers outside a Melbourne police station. Both officers are recovering. Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the knife attack was inspired by the Islamic State group. Australia, which is backing the United States and its escalating action against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, is on high alert for attacks by supporters of the militant group. Two weeks ago, police detained 16 people in counterterrorism raids in Sydney and charged one with conspiring with an Islamic State leader in Syria to behead a random person. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/australia-police-arrest-man-for-fundi ng-terror-group-in-syria/2467049.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/australia-police-arrest-man-for-funding-terror-group-in-syria/2467049.html
