                  Taliban Militants Storm Province Near Kabul

   Afghan officials say Taliban insurgents have stormed a province near
   the capital, killing dozens of people over the past week.

   Authorities say the killings by insurgents included at least 12
   beheadings in the Ajrestan district of Ghazni province, 200 kilometers
   from Kabul.

   According to Reuters news agency, provincial officials say an estimated
   700 Taliban fighters launched the attack on the area and have killed
   more than 100 people.

   The battle in Ajrestan illustrates the grave challenges facing
   Afghanistan's new president and the security forces in holding
   territory as foreign combat troops prepare to leave at the end of the
   year.
