US Launches 2nd Round of Syria Airstikes by VOA News A U.S.-led coalition has launched airstrikes in Syria against the Islamic State for a second day. Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby says the target of Wednesday's campaign was an area used by the militants to move equipment across the border into Iraq. Kirby said during an interview with CNN television that the U.S. also struck Islamic State targets in Iraq, near the Kurdish city of Irbil and the capital, Baghdad. The latest campaign follows the first strikes in Syrian by Washington and five Arab allies on Tuesday. Kirby says the U.S. "caused the kind of damage we wanted to cause" with targeted airstrikes a day earlier. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports 120 militants belonging to the Islamic State and al-Qaida were killed on Tuesday. The initial strikes in Syria included help from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
