Slight Lead for Unionists in Scottish Independence Vote by VOA News Early results in Scotland's referendum on independence from Britain show a slight lead for those voting in favor of keeping the union intact. Partial tallies showed the anti-independence supporters having the majority in central Clackmannanshire, the remote Orkney Islands, Shetland and the Western Isles. Announcements from larger cities such as Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen are expected in the coming hours. The official tally on whether Scotland will end its 307-year union with Britain is expected Friday. Pre-referendum polls showed independence opponents with a slight lead. The latest survey of 3,000 voters by [1]YouGov, released Thursday evening, shows support for No to independence at 54 percent and Yes at 46 percent. Nearly all of Scotland's 4 million eligible voters - 97 percent - registered to cast their ballot in the referendum.
