China's Xi Begins First State Visit to Rival Power India by VOA News Chinese President Xi Jinping has begun his first state visit to India, a trip aimed at expanding trade relations between the two Asian powers. Xi arrived Wednesday in Ahmedabad in the western state of Gujarat, which is the home city of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two men will discuss a range of issues. Gujarat is also home to a large portion of China's overall investment in India, including the country's first so-called "smart city" that is still under development. Indian officials hope to attract more such Chinese investments in order to help balance out a trade deficit that is heavily skewed in China's favor. Ahead of his visit, Xi used an editorial in The Hindu to praise China-India ties as "one of the most dynamic and promising" relationships in the 21st century. China-India relations have been strained by a long-running dispute over their Himalayan border, as well as mutual distrust about one another's rising strength. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/china-president-xi-jinping-state-visi t-india-prime-minister-narendra-modi/2452791.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/china-president-xi-jinping-state-visit-india-prime-minister-narendra-modi/2452791.html
