Apple Unveils Smartwatch and New iPhones by VOA News U.S. technology giant Apple has ventured into its first new market in years with the unveiling of its long-anticipated smartwatch. Known as the Apple Watch, it is the first Apple product to be developed under Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook, who took over in 2011 just weeks before the death of company co-founder Steve Jobs. The wearable device will combine health and fitness monitoring with other functions, such as mapping and unlocking hotel doors. It will be available early next year at a starting price of $349. Cook presented the new product Tuesday in Cupertino, California after introducing two updated versions of Apple's popular iPhone. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus offer bigger screens and more power. Cook called the update "the biggest advancement" in the history of the product, which has been sold across the world since 2007. South Korea's Samsung leads global cell phone sales by a wide margin over Apple, but the U.S. firm remains among the world's most valuable companies. Apple said the cost for the smaller iPhone 6, measuring nearly 12 centimeters, will start at $199. The bigger iPhone 6 Plus, measuring nearly 14 centimeters, will cost $299 for the lowest amount of storage, with both models available September 19. The company plans to give away an older model for free as long as users agree to two-year contracts with their cell phone carriers. In addition to the Apple Watch and the new iPhones, Apple is introducing a new mobile payments service. Apple Pay will allow users to pay for consumer products using their phones, instead of traditional credit or debit cards. The card information will be stored securely on each device __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/apple-introduces-two-bigger-more-powe rful-iphone-models/2444114.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/apple-introduces-two-bigger-more-powerful-iphone-models/2444114.html
