World Boosts Ebola Aid; UN Funds Fall Short by VOA News The international community is ramping up efforts to combat the Ebola outbreak in West Africa that has killed about 4,500 people, but is falling short on funding U.N. efforts at containing the virus. A British Royal Navy ship is set to leave for Sierra Leone Friday with medical teams and experts aboard. A day earlier, U.S. President Barack Obama authorized additional military forces to help the 4,000 U.S. personnel already committed to containment efforts in West Africa. And the World Health Organization announced Thursday it is sending teams to Ivory Coast and Mali to evaluate the countries' preparations to deal with the virus. The WHO will also increase coordination with an additional 13 at-risk countries in the region. But U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has nevertheless reissued his appeal for contributions to fight Ebola. Member states pledged $20 million of the estimated $1 billion requested by December 1 to reduce the rate of transmission in West Africa. Ban said only $100,000 in cash has been donated to the fund - and that came from only one country, Colombia. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/world-boosts-ebola-aid-un-funds-fall- short/2486831.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/world-boosts-ebola-aid-un-funds-fall-short/2486831.html
