The Swedish Academy said it awarded the $1.1 million prize to Modiano "for the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the occupation." Modiano's writing often focuses on life under German occupation in World War Two France. Some of his works have been translated into English and include the novels " A Trace of Malice," "Honeymoon" and "Missing Person."
