UN Condemns Deadly Attack on Peacekeepers in Mali by VOA News The United Nations Security Council has condemned an attack that killed a Senegalese peacekeeper and wounded another in northern Mali. In a statement late Tuesday, the council called on Mali's government to investigate and bring the attackers to justice. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also said he was "outraged" by the attack. A spokesman for the U.N. mission in Mali said unknown assailants fired as many as eight rockets at a joint U.N.-French base in the city of Kidal. The attack follows one last Friday that killed nine peacekeepers from Niger. U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous was in Mali on Tuesday to attend a funeral for those killed last week. He told reporters that a lower number of French troops in the region has led to a rise in violence. Since July 2013, a total of 31 peacekeepers have been killed and 91 wounded in Mali. Northern Mali fell under control of Tuareg rebels and then al-Qaida-linked Islamic extremists following a 2012 military coup. A French-led intervention last year scattered the extremists, but some remain active. The rebels and Malian government have held talks in Algiers aimed at clinching a lasting peace agreement. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/un-condemns-deadly-attack-on-peacekee pers-in-mali/2476252.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/un-condemns-deadly-attack-on-peacekeepers-in-mali/2476252.html
