Kenyan President Departs for ICC Court Appearance by VOA News Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has left his country to attend a hearing on his case at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Kenyatta flew out of Nairobi on Tuesday, a day before his appearance at the ICC. He is facing five charges of crimes against humanity for allegedly helping organize the deadly post-election violence that hit Kenya in early 2008. While Kenyatta is away, his deputy, William Ruto, is serving as Kenya's acting president. The ICC has also charged Ruto with crimes against humanity in connection with the 2008 violence. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges in a trial that began a year ago. Kenyatta's trial was originally set to begin in February, but was postponed repeatedly as the ICC's prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, said the Kenyan government was not providing key documents her office requested. In September, Bensouda said that in the current situation, her office did not have enough evidence to prove the charges against Kenyatta beyond a reasonable doubt. The court said this week's conference will focus on the "status of cooperation" between the prosecution and the Kenyan government. More than 1,100 people died and hundreds of thousands were displaced in the wave of ethnic violence that rocked Kenya in early 2008. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/kenyan-president-departs-for-icc-cour t-appearance/2475041.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/kenyan-president-departs-for-icc-court-appearance/2475041.html
