                   US Unemployment Rate Falls to 5.9 Percent

   The U.S. unemployment rate fell to a six-year low of 5.9 percent in
   September.

   Friday's closely-watched report from the [1]Labor Department also says
   the economy had a net gain of 248,000 jobs.

   Both figures were stronger than most economists had predicted.

   Some experts say the data may encourage the U.S. central bank to raise
   interest rates by the middle of next year.

   The Federal Reserve had cut interest rates to record lows in an effort
   to stimulate the economy and cut unemployment.
