Respiratory Virus Linked to Four Deaths in US by VOA News U.S. public health officials say at least four people have died after contracting a severe respiratory virus that has spread across the nation. Officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday it was unclear what role the virus, known as enterovirus 68, played in these fatalities, including a 10-year-old girl who died last week in Rhode Island. The CDC said at least 500 people in 42 states and the District of Columbia have been sickened by the EV-68 virus, many of them children. EV-68 is a commonly occurring virus, but health officials say the number of confirmed cases this year is higher than normal. Officials are also investigating a possible link of the virus with small children in Denver, Colorado who have suffered paralysis or muscle weakness. The virus causes fever, coughing and other symptoms, and can lead to severe breathing troubles, especially among people who suffer from asthma. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/respiratory-virus-linked-to-deaths-in -us/2469764.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/respiratory-virus-linked-to-deaths-in-us/2469764.html
