Former Nixon Aide James Schlesinger Dies Former U.S. Cabinet member James R. Schlesinger has died at the age of 85 from complications of pneumonia. Schlesinger was appointed director of the CIA in 1973 by former president Richard M. Nixon, then was named defense secretary a few months later, serving until 1975. He later was put in charge of the newly formed Department of Energy in 1979 by former president Jimmy Carter. As defense secretary, Schlesinger overhauled the nation`s nuclear posture, developing the "flexible response" policy that was unveiled in early 1974. In June 2008, then Defense Secretary Robert Gates called on Schlesinger to lead an investigation into security and control of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, after reported incidents in which the Air Force mishandled nuclear weapons. During the past decade, Schlesinger also served on the Homeland Security Advisory Council, as a consultant to the Defense Department, and a member of the Defense Policy Board. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/former-nixon-aide-james-schlesinger-d ies/1880609.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/former-nixon-aide-james-schlesinger-dies/1880609.html
