                     New York Building Collapses, Killing 1

   An apartment building collapsed in northern Manhattan Wednesday,
   leaving at least one dead and 17 wounded.  Rescue workers are searching
   for people who may be trapped in the rubble, officials said.
   Huge clouds of smoke were seen coming from the charred remains of the
   structure located in a mostly residential area in East Harlem.
   Neighbors said the collapse was accompanied by a loud roar that could
   be heard several blocks away and rattled windows in the neighborhood.
   A crowd of residents filled the surrounding streets, which were later
   blocked off  by police with yellow tape.
   The New York Police Department said it was investigating reports that
   the collapse  involved two buildings.
   Train service in the area was suspended due to debris in nearby streets
   and passengers were forced to get off the Metro-North rail line at a
   stop in Bronx, near the site of the collapse.
