Sudanese Christian Woman to Be Freed Again by VOA News Days after her death sentence on charges of apostasy was overturned, a Sudanese Christian woman who subsequently was detained on suspicion of forged travel documents is expected to be released soon. Meriam Yahya Ibrahim had been taken into custody Tuesday at the airport in Khartoum, Sudan, while attempting to fly to the United States with her American-born husband and their two young children, a day after an appeals court overturned a lower court's death sentence. Ibrahim had been sentenced in May to be hanged for refusing to abandon her Christian faith, having converted from Islam to marry her Christian husband. The case drew international attention. Sharif Ali Sharif, an attorney for the 27-year-old Ibraham, told VOA that she would be released from detention in Khartoum as soon as she had posted bail. Sudanese authorities had detained her after alleging she had a falsified passport. A U.S. State Department representative said Thursday that Ibrahim had the appropriate documents to travel to the United States, Reuters reported. "It's up to the government of Sudan to allow her to exit the country,'' spokeswoman Marie Harf said at a daily press briefing, according to Reuters. "We are in communication with the Sudanese Foreign Ministry to ensure that she and her family will be free to travel as quickly as possible.'' Ibrahim originally was convicted of apostasy under a Sudanese law that states children of Muslim fathers are considered Muslim. Ibrahim, born to a Christian mother and a Muslim father, was brought up as a Christian after her father left the family. She refused to convert. A court also sentenced Ibrahim to 100 lashes on charges of adultery for marrying a Christian. Under Sudanese law, Muslims are not permitted to marry outside their faith. Ibrahim delivered the couple's second child, a girl, in late May while she was imprisoned. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/article/1945746.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/article/1945746.html
