El-Sissi Inaugurated as Egypt's President by VOA News Former Egyptian army chief Abdel Fattah el-Sissi has been sworn in as Egypt's new president, little more than a week after winning a landslide victory that was never in doubt. The ceremony took place Sunday at the Supreme Constitutional Court in Cairo. Sissi comes to power nearly a year after he and the army toppled the previous president, Islamist Mohamed Morsi. Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood boycotted this election and has been subject to a crackdown by the military-installed government. Sissi has said the Brotherhood has no future in Egypt. The new president faces considerable challenges, including ongoing violence and a shattered economy. Many opponents to Sissi have expressed fears the country will return to autocratic rule, like that of former president Hosni Mubarak. Sissi headed military intelligence under Mr. Mubarak, and was appointed army chief and defense minister by Mr. Morsi two years ago. Sissi is the fifth Egyptian president to come from the military. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/egypt-inauguration/1932008.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/egypt-inauguration/1932008.html
