Kerry in Vienna for Iran Nuclear Talks by VOA News U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says "significant gaps" remain in negotiations seeking to broker a deal on Iran's nuclear program. Kerry said Sunday in Austria "it is vital to make certain that Iran is not going to develop a nuclear weapon." The top U.S. diplomat is in Vienna for a new round of nuclear talks with Iran and other involved countries. A senior U.S. official at the talks says Iran has not moved from what he calls its "unworkable and inadequate" positions. The official said there has been some progress but that both sides are still very far apart on some key issues, including uranium enrichment. Another U.S. official said it would be difficult to extend the talks beyond the July 20 deadline without seeing progress on those issues. Britain, France and Germany have also sent their foreign ministers to Vienna. The Chinese and Russian ministers are not traveling to Vienna, but are sending top diplomats. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister and chief negotiator Abbas Araghchi says he hopes the foreign ministers can achieve a breakthrough, but he said the differences are deep. An interim deal for Iran to curb its nuclear enrichment program in exchange for an easing of Western sanctions expires next Sunday. Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States are trying to work out a longer term deal with Iran. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/kerry-in-vienna-for-iran-nuclear-talk s/1956455.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/kerry-in-vienna-for-iran-nuclear-talks/1956455.html
