Thai Court Rules Snap Election Can Be Delayed by VOA News Thailand's Constitutional Court has ruled that the a snap election scheduled for February 2 can be legally delayed despite a constiutional stipulation that an election be held within 60 days of the dissolution or parliament. The court met in secret Friday before announcing the ruling in the afternoon. The judges ruled that it would be up to caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and the Election Commission chairman to agree on a new election date. The opposition had been demanding that the election be postponed, but the government had argued that a postponement was not legally possible. The Election Commission said on Wednesday it was seeking a ruling from the Constitutional Court. The commission has repeatedly warned the government about possible disruptions to the February polls, including security and insufficient volunteers to man the polling booths. Opposition leader Suthep Thaugsuban has led 11 consecutive days of protests in the capital, attempting to overthrow what he views as a corrupt government and replace it with an unelected people's council. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/thai-court-rules-snap-election-can-be -delayed/1836687.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/thai-court-rules-snap-election-can-be-delayed/1836687.html
