                    Commission to Probe C.A.R Rights Abuses

   United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has named a three-member
   International Commission to investigate all reports of human rights
   violations in the Central African Republic and help ensure those
   responsible are held accountable.
   Those appointed to the commission are former Mexican foreign minister
   Jorge Castaņeda, Mauritanian human rights lawyer Fatimata M`Baye and
   Bernard Acho Muna, a lawyer from Cameroon and Deputy Chief Prosecutor
   for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, who will chair the
   Commission.
   The U.N. estimates thousands have been killed in the C.A.R. since the
   African nation descended into chaos last year after mostly Muslim
   Seleka rebels toppled President Francois Bozize.
   Attacks and looting by the rebels sparked the rise of Christian defense
   groups and a cycle of killings. The U.N. humanitarian agency says 882
   people have been killed in Bangui alone since early December.
