De Blasio Sworn in as New York Mayor While New Year`s revelers partied in New York City`s Times Square, Bill de Blasio took the oath of office to become the city`s mayor, the first democrat to occupy the office in two decades. De Blasio was sworn in just moments after midnight Wednesday in front of his Brooklyn home. He will be sworn in formally later in the day in a larger ceremony, with the oath administered by former U.S. President Bill Clinton. De Blasio takes over from three-term mayor Michael Bloomberg, an independent who is credited with bringing down crime rates and making the city more environmentally friendly. Bloomberg has been criticized, however, by de Blasio and others, for leaving the city sharply divided between high earners living comfortably and low-income residents who struggle to meet their expenses. That income gap is one of de Blasio`s biggest challenges. He faces a poor relationship between the city`s police force and the community it serves, and he is expected to push for his signature proposal, universal access to pre-kindergarten. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/de-blasio-sworn-in-as-new-york-mayor/ 1821214.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/de-blasio-sworn-in-as-new-york-mayor/1821214.html
