Syrian Sides Meet for Joint Peace Talks by VOA News U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is holding joint talks Tuesday with delegates from the Syrian government and the opposition to President Bashar al-Assad. The meeting in Geneva comes on the second day of a new round of talks, as Brahimi tries to get the parties to negotiate an end to nearly three years of fighting and set up a transitional government. He held separate meetings with the two sides Monday. The first round of talks ended last month with little progress. Meanwhile, humanitarian workers are continuing an effort to aid civilians in the battered city of Homs. The government and opposition have agreed to a humanitarian pause in Homs through Wednesday, which the United Nations hopes will allow more supplies to reach the area and for more civilians to get out. More than 800 people have been evacuated from the rebel-held city since Thursday. More than 130,000 people have been killed and nine million forced from their homes since the conflict began in 2011. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/syrian-sides-meet-for-joint-peace-tal ks/1848748.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/syrian-sides-meet-for-joint-peace-talks/1848748.html
