Cambodia: Bail Denied for Activists Arrested During Labor Protest by VOA News A Cambodian court has denied bail for 21 activists and workers arrested during clashes with police at a labor protest last month. A defense attorney for some of the detainees said the appeals court judge rejected bail because he was afraid to "disturb public order." The attorney plans to appeal to Cambodia's supreme court. The activists were arrested during a deadly January 3 crackdown on a strike by garment factory workers in Phnom Penh. Five people were killed and 40 injured by an elite military unit that fired into the crowd. An ensuing crackdown led to a general ban on demonstrations that has seen many more detained and injured. Human Rights Watch has called on Cambodia to release the activists and lift the protest ban, which it has said is in violation of international law. The labor protests are linked to a wave of opposition demonstrations that have threatened the rule of longtime Prime Minister Hun Sen. The main opposition party has been demanding that Hun Sen step down and call new elections because of alleged fraud in July's parliamentary polls. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/cambodia-bail-denied-for-activists-ar rested-during-labor-protest/1848746.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/cambodia-bail-denied-for-activists-arrested-during-labor-protest/1848746.html
