Palestinians Press UN for Statehood Approval by VOA News Palestinians are pressing the United Nations Security Council for a vote this week on statehood and an end to Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories within three years. Arab ambassadors met Monday at the U.N. regarding the wording of the statehood resolution, which Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said would be submitted to the 15-member Security Council later in the day. The United States, one of five countries on the Security Council with veto power, has already announced it will not support a U.N. resolution that sets a deadline for withdrawal of Israeli security forces from Palestinian lands. The resolution also would fail if it does attract the required minimum support from nine countries. The Palestinian resolution calls for a peace deal with Israel within a year and creation of a Palestinian capital in East Jerusalem. Israel also claims Jerusalem as its capital, although most foreign countries maintain their embassies to Israel in Tel Aviv.
