Interpol Nabs Accused Ivory Smuggler by VOA News The international police agency Interpol says it has arrested an alleged ivory trafficker who had been on the run for months. The head of Interpol, Vitalis Okumu, said Tuesday that officers apprehended Feisal Ali a day earlier at a rental home in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Ali, a Kenyan national, was on the Interpol "most wanted" list as a trafficker of ivory, which is taken from poached elephants. He faces charges in Kenya of dealing and possession of elephant tusks. The charges stem from an incident in which he was found in possession of more than 300 pieces of ivory, about two tons in all. Interpol says he also is alleged to be the head of an ivory smuggling ring. The international ivory trade was banned in the late 1980s as part of efforts to protect declining elephant populations. Activists have warned the animals are endangered because of poachers killing elephants for their ivory tusks. Ali was apprehended through an Interpol program targeting environmental crimes. The program, called Operation Infra Terra, led to the arrest of another ivory smuggler, Ben Simaskiu, in Zambia three weeks ago. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/interpol-nabs-accused-ivory-smuggler/ 2570802.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/interpol-nabs-accused-ivory-smuggler/2570802.html
