Obama Calls for Probe into Gender Gap in Pay by VOA News U.S. President Barack Obama has signed two executive orders to address the issue of equal pay for women. The president said the gender gap between men and women is an embarrassment. He said U.S. Census Bureau figures show the average full-time working woman makes just 77 cents for every dollar a man earns in the United States. The executive orders require federal contractors to provide compensation data by race and gender and prohibit federal contractors from retaliating against workers who discuss their pay. Legislation is being debated in Congress that would make it easier for workers to sue companies for paying women less than men because of gender. The president's Democratic party is pushing the pay gender gap issue as an election year issue. But Republicans in Congress, backed by business groups, are expected to block the legislation when it comes to a vote, expected sometime this week. Republicans blocked similar bills in 2012 and 2010. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/obama-orders-address-pay-equality-for -women/1888996.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/obama-orders-address-pay-equality-for-women/1888996.html
