Pistorius Defense Begins Case at Murder Trial by VOA News The defense for South African runner Oscar Pistorius has begun presenting its case, as his lawyers try to convince the court he is not guilty of murdering his girlfriend at his home last year. The defense called its first witness Monday after a week-long break in the trial. Pistorius is expected to testify later. He has said he thought he was shooting at an intruder when he fired through a locked bathroom door and killed Reeva Steenkamp. The prosecution, which wrapped up its case last month, claims Pistorius intentionally shot her. He pleaded not guilty to charges of premeditated murder and three firearm-related offenses. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison. Pistorius is known as the "blade runner" for his carbon-fiber prosthetic legs. He became the first double-amputee to compete in the Olympics when he ran at the 2012 games in London. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/pistorius-defense-begins-case-at-murd er-trial/1887711.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/pistorius-defense-begins-case-at-murder-trial/1887711.html
