Militants Attack US Base in Afghanistan by VOA News Officials in eastern Afghanistan say suicide bombers have attacked a U.S. base near the Pakistani border. Authorities say the insurgents struck the base Monday morning in Torkham in Nangarhar province, resulting in explosions and a gunbattle. Several vehicles were set afire. Officials say part of a highway, an important route for NATO supply trucks, has been closed. NATO officials say none of its personnel were killed. There militants are reported to have died. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. The Taliban has escalated its attacks in recent weeks, a surge that comes as U.S.-led foreign troops reduce their presence in Afghanistan ahead of a full withdrawal by the end of next year. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/militants-attack-us-base-in-afghanist an/1741444.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/militants-attack-us-base-in-afghanistan/1741444.html
