Fighting Erupts Between Soldiers, M23 in DRC U.N.-backed soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo are advancing on M23 rebels in a region near the Ugandan border, as the army continues its bid to oust the rebels from their strongholds. Government officials said Wednesday that heavy fighting had erupted near the eastern town of Bunagana. The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) says the fighting has prompted more than 5,000 civilians to flee into Uganda. It says that number could double by Thursday. The Congolese army has seized several towns from M23 since fighting began last Friday. M23 consists of rebel fighters who joined the Congolese army in a 2009 peace deal but later defected after complaining of poor treatment. Earlier this month, the U.N. said the peace talks in Uganda between the government and the rebels had stalled. Negotiators said the two sides remained apart over proposed amnesty for the rebels. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/fighting-erupts-between-soldiers-m23- in-drc/1779849.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/fighting-erupts-between-soldiers-m23-in-drc/1779849.html
