              'God Particle' Theorists Receive Nobel Physics Prize

   The 2013 Nobel Prize for physics has been won by Francois Englert of
   Belgium and Peter Higgs of Britain.
   The Nobel Committee announced the winners of the prize Tuesday in
   Stockholm. Englert and Higgs were chosen for "theoretical discovery of
   a mechanism that contributes to . . . understanding of the origin of
   mass of subatomic particles."
   ''The two scientists are known for discovering the so-called Higgs
   particle, nicknamed "the God particle" because it validates a very
   basic concept of particle physics, the so-called "Higgs field," which
   is believed to make possible the existence of atoms themselves.
   Unusually, Tuesday's announcement of the winners was delayed by an
   hour, with no explanation given.
   Prizes for achievements in science, literature and peace were first
   awarded in 1901 in accordance with the will of dynamite inventor and
   businessman Alfred Nobel.
