US Sanctions Rwanda Over Child Soldiers The United States has imposed sanctions on Rwanda for its alleged support of a group that uses child soldiers. State Department official Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the assistant secretary in the Bureau of African Affairs, announced the sanctions Thursday in an online forum with African reporters. Thomas-Greenfield gave few details, but said the sanctions are related to a rebel group in eastern Congo that Rwanda is accused of supporting. "In this case it was related to M23, and we will continue to have discussions with the Rwandan government on that issue," she said. United Nations experts say Rwandan has provided arms and training to M23, a group that has seized territory in Congo`s North Kivu province. Rwanda denies backing the rebels. Thomas-Greenfield did not specify the nature of the sanctions but said other countries are being sanctioned as well. She said the U.S. was acting under the Child Soldiers Protection Act, which was signed into law in 2008 by President George W. Bush. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/us-sanctions-rwanda-over-child-soldie rs/1762220.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/us-sanctions-rwanda-over-child-soldiers/1762220.html
