                Former Mali Coup Leader Detained for Questioning

   Soldiers in Mali have detained Amadou Sanogo, the army officer who led
   last year's coup and briefly served as the country's de facto leader.
   Sanogo's communications director, Mohamed Coulibaly, said that security
   forces took Sanogo from his home in the capital Wednesday and brought
   him before a judge whose summons the former coup leader had repeatedly
   ignored.
   Mali's Minister of Justice Muhammad Ali Bathily said that Sanogo was
   not indicted, but that security agents want to interrogate him about
   some army personnel who disappeared last month.
   Coulibaly said Sanogo had refused the services of a lawyer, and that
   his whereabouts after the court appearance were unknown.
   Sanogo retains considerable influence in Mali despite handing over
   power to a transitional government after the March 2012 coup.
   He was recently promoted all the way from captain to general, skipping
   three other army ranks.
   The overthrow of the president last year allowed Islamist militants to
   seize control of northern Mali. The militants were driven from power by
   French and African troops early this year, and Mali has since elected a
   new president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.
