UN Sets January 22 for Syria Peace Talks The United Nations says a long-awaited Syrian peace conference will be held January 22 in Geneva. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the date Monday, after U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi met with senior diplomats from the United States and Russia. The goal of the talks is to bring together the Syrian government and the opposition trying to oust President Bashar al-Assad in order to negotiate a political settlement in Syria. For months, the proposed conference has been delayed over questions about who would attend, and under what conditions. The Syrian conflict began in March 2011 as peaceful protests calling for reforms, at the time a wave of popular uprisings spread across countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The situation evolved into a civil war that has killed more than 120,000 people and forces millions from their homes. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/un-sets-january-22-for-syria-peace-ta lks/1796963.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/un-sets-january-22-for-syria-peace-talks/1796963.html
