The Scars of Akhtara by RFE/RL Akhtara is a widow and single mother of four living in the Afghan capital Kabul. Several years ago, the man who killed her husband threw acid in her face after she refused to marry him. Her face is badly scarred but she agreed to lift her burqa and speak to RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan about the attack and the pain she and her children have endured. The story was produced by RFE/RL's Multimedia Unit in cooperation with Radio Free Afghanistan and is being released to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
