Chile Presidential Election Under Way Chileans are heading to the polls to choose a president from nine candidates, with a former president favored to win. Center-left candidate Michelle Bachelet holds a wide lead with her reform platform. She was Chile`s first woman president, serving from 2006 to 2010. Ms. Bachelet is backed by her New Majority alliance of socialists, Christian Democrats and communists. She has pledged to narrow the country`s wage income gap and revise the constitution, which dates back to the 17-year dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. A candidate must win more than half of the vote to be elected outright. Otherwise, the two top candidates will face a runoff on December 15. All 120 lower house seats and 20 out of 38 Senate seats are also being contested. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/chile-presidential-election-under-way /1791741.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/chile-presidential-election-under-way/1791741.html
