UN Security Council Rejects Challenge to ICC Kenya Trial The U.N. Security Council has rejected a proposal to delay the trials of Kenya`s top leaders by the International Criminal Court. A draft resolution to postpone for 12 months the trials of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto fell short in a Friday morning vote. Seven of the Council`s 15 members voted in favor of the measure, while the other eight abstained. The African-proposed resolution needed at least nine votes along with no vetoes by the Council`s five permanent members to pass. Mr. Kenyatta and his deputy are charged with crimes against humanity for allegedly organizing post-election violence in 2007 and 2008 that killed more than 1,100 people. Both men have denied the charges. Kenya has pushed for the ICC to delay or drop the trials, on grounds that the two leaders are needed at home to fight terrorism. Some African leaders also accuse the ICC of a bias against Africans. Supporters of the trials say victims of the post-election violence have already waited too long for justice. Resolution sponsors Rwanda, Togo and Morocco voted in favor of the measure to delay the trials, along with Russia, China, Azerbaijan and Pakistan. The United States, Britain and France were among the countries that abstained. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/un-security-council-rejects-challenge -to-icc-kenya-trial/1790892.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/un-security-council-rejects-challenge-to-icc-kenya-trial/1790892.html
