Pakistan's Private Schools Ban Malala's Memoir by VOA News Pakistani education officials have banned Malala Yousafzai's book from private schools across the country, claiming it does not show enough respect for Islam and has turned the teenage activist into a "tool of the West." Malala attracted global attention last year when the Taliban shot her in the head in northwest Pakistan for criticizing the group's interpretation of Islam, which limits girls' access to education. Her profile has risen steadily since then, and she released a memoir I Am Malala last month. Officials representing thousands of private schools across Pakistan said the book did not show enough respect for Islam because it mentioned the Prophet Muhammad's name without using the abbreviation PUH -- "peace be upon him'' -- as is customary in many parts of the Muslim world. They also objected to Malala writing favorably of author Salman Rushdie, who angered many Muslims with his book The Satanic Verses. They said the book will never be made part of the libraries or the curriculum in private schools. It also will not be allowed for co-curricular activities like essay writing or debating competitions. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/pakistans-private-schools-ban-malalas -memoir/1787551.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/pakistans-private-schools-ban-malalas-memoir/1787551.html
