Authorities say the attackers opened fire on the villagers who were celebrating the Hindu holiday of Diwali in the Golapara district of Assam state on Sunday night. Police say they suspect members of a rebel group, the Garo National Liberation Army, are responsible for the assault. "Suspected GLNA extremists, they came in army fatigue dress and opened indiscriminate fire without giving them a warning... 6 Rava [tribal villagers] persons died and 10 are injured. Out of the 10, when they were shifted to the hospital, one of them succumbed to his injury. So in total, now seven deaths and nine injured, and all of them... having bullet injuries," said Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Law and Order, A.P. Raut. The injured were rushed to a nearby government hospital. Militants belonging to GLNA are based in the Garo hills of India's northeastern Meghalaya state. More than 200 ethnic and tribal communities live in India's strategic northeast, comprised of eight mountainous states and encircled by Bangladesh, Bhutan, China and Myanmar. More than a dozen insurgent groups have been fighting the government for decades in the states of northeastern India, killing thousands in attacks on civilians and security forces. The groups blame the federal government of plundering the region's significant mineral and agricultural resources and forest produce while ignoring demands for greater autonomy and greater economic opportunities to the locals.
